Severe waterlogging forces locals to use boats on roads amid torrential rains
Continuous heavy rainfall has led to extreme waterlogging in several areas, leaving streets submerged and forcing residents to resort to using boats for transportation in southern India’s Karnataka. The situation highlights the growing infrastructure challenges as the region grapples with unprecedented flooding.
The incident took place in Bengaluru district and the video went viral on October 22.
Visuals showed the streets were completely waterlogged, with water rising to significant levels, creating an almost river-like appearance. The murky floodwaters lapped against buildings and vehicles, making the roads invisible beneath. A rescue team arrived, maneuvering boats through the submerged streets, prepared for any emergency. The boats floated steadily, ready to assist people who might need help crossing the flooded areas in case the situation worsened, adding a sense of urgency and precaution amid the overwhelming scene of the deluge.
According to reports, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rains in the Karnataka capital city, Bengaluru, today i.e. on October 22. Yesterday, due to the incessant rain, the District collector had declared a holiday for Anganwadis, schools in the city. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure and in the interest of students, the Collector had said. However, today, no such announcement has been made. At many places, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has said that dewatering work is under process to clear all stagnant water.
