Update: Massive python rescued from Himayat Sagar crest gate in southern India after dramatic rescue

A giant python caused chaos at the Himayat Sagar reservoir in southern India’s Telangana, getting trapped at the crest gate and suffering for hours. Local authorities and the Snake Society worked together in a daring rescue to save the distressed creature.

The incident took place at the Himayat Sagar Reservoir, specifically at the crest gate of the reservoir, which is located on the outskirts of Hyderabad on October 20.

Visuals showed the snake was found entangled at the crust gate, posing a significant challenge due to its size and the precarious location. Undeterred by the risk, Vara Prasad descended to the gate with the help of a rope, carefully restraining the snake’s head to prevent any danger.

As he attempted to bring the python up, the reptile became further entangled, wrapping itself around his hand. Unable to climb back to safety, the situation turned tense. With quick thinking and teamwork, fellow FOS members pulled Vara Prasad up, managing to bring both him and the python safely to the surface.

According to reports upon receiving the distress call, FOS member Dakarapu Vara Prasad rushed to the scene. The snake was found entangled at the crust gate, posing a significant challenge due to its size and precarious location. Undeterred by the risk, Vara Prasad descended to the gate with the help of a rope, carefully restraining the snake’s head to prevent any danger.

With support from the dam workers, he climbed the dam and rescued the 20-kilo reptile. The snake has been shifted to the Snake Rescue Centre for care and subsequent relocation.

“It was a risky operation, especially with the python’s weight and strength, but we had no choice but to act fast,” said Avinash Viswanathan, a senior member of the FOS.

After the rescue, the python was safely handed over to the Nehru Zoo authorities for care and eventual release into the wild. The daring operation earned praise from onlookers and the water board staff for the bravery and expertise demonstrated by the FOS team.
