Video of gunfire during goddess immersion in northern India emerges

In a disturbing incident in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh, a video surfaced showing the moment a 22-year-old man was shot during a Durga idol procession.

The incident took place in Bahraich district and the video went viral on October 16.

Visuals showed Ram Gopal Mishra hoisting a flag on a terrace when he was suddenly shot by someone from another terrace, causing him to collapse instantly.

According to reports, tensions escalated following Mishra’s death, resulting in violent protests during his funeral. Armed crowds in the Maharajganj area caused extensive damage, torching several shops and vehicles. Injuries were reported due to stone pelting and firing, leading authorities to suspend internet services in the Bahraich district as a precautionary measure, which continued into Wednesday. A significant police presence was deployed, and markets remained closed as residents stayed indoors.

The primary suspect, Salman, remains at large, with the Uttar Pradesh Police actively pursuing his arrest. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath met with Mishra’s family on Tuesday, assuring them that the culprits behind this “unforgivable incident” will face consequences. Additionally, financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh has been announced for the bereaved family.
