Relentless rain causes severe flooding as roads submerge in southern India, more expected

Continuous rainfall due to a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal has caused severe flooding across southern India Karnataka, affecting major tech parks, roads, and daily activities. The city is expected to experience more rain throughout the week, with warnings of heavy downpours in other parts. 

The incident took place at Manyata Tech Park in North Bengaluru on October 15. 

Visuals showed after continuous and prolonged rainfall, the road was heavily flooded, with water accumulating significantly. The waterlogging created severe difficulties for both people and vehicles, making it extremely challenging to pass through. Vehicles struggled to navigate the submerged streets, and pedestrians were left wading through ankle-deep or even knee-high water, causing major disruptions in daily movement. The scene was chaotic, with stalled cars and people attempting to find alternate paths through the flooded area.

According to reports, Manyata Tech Park, one of the city’s largest IT hubs in North Bengaluru, has been heavily affected. Roads leading to the tech park, particularly in Rammayya Layout, are waterlogged, with sewage and rainwater overflowing into the streets. Employees working in the tech park faced challenges reaching their offices, with many vehicles breaking down in the floodwaters.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the rain will persist in Bengaluru for the next week. In the last 24 hours, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 25.4°C and a minimum of 20.7°C, along with 3.3 mm of rainfall. The IMD has also issued warnings of heavy rain in the coming days for other regions in Karnataka, including the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, as well as southern interior areas like Kodagu, Chamarajanagar, Mandya, and Mysore.

By October 16, light to moderate rainfall is expected in Karnataka’s coastal districts, while regions such as Dharwad, Gadag, and parts of Haveri in North Karnataka could experience moderate showers. The heavy rainfall is expected to continue in coastal Karnataka until October 17. Bengaluru, along with nearby districts such as Chikkamagaluru, Kolar, and Ramanagara, is on alert for further rainfall, which may bring additional disruptions in the coming days.
