Tragic! Leopard severely injured after getting trapped in fencing wire of field in northern India

In a tragic incident in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh, a leopard that strayed from the forest became ensnared in a farmer’s field.

The incident took place near Sherpur Pelo in Saharanpur district on September 16.

Visuals showed the leopard caught in dense fencing wire, with rescue personnel cautiously approaching the trapped animal in the thick brush. The scene depicted the urgency of the rescue effort as officials sought to free the distressed leopard.

According to reports, senior officials were alerted, and Divisional Director of the Social Forestry Division, Shweta Sen, arrived on site. After consulting with an experienced wildlife rescue team over the phone, the forest department initiated the rescue operation.

The department informed headquarters, leading to the arrival of the entire rescue team. The team first sedated the leopard before carefully cutting the wires to free it. The entire process lasted about five hours. Unfortunately, one of the leopard’s claws was severely injured from being caught in the barbed wire.

Despite the rescue efforts, the leopard succumbed to its injuries and died during treatment on Wednesday night. A post-mortem was conducted in Behat range on Thursday. Initial findings suggest the leopard died due to injuries caused by the wire, though the definitive cause will be determined once the post-mortem report is available. The viscera has been sent to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly for further examination
