Massive landslides continue to disrupt border roads in northern India

In a series of alarming events, heavy landslides in northern India’s Uttarakhand have blocked crucial roads connecting India and China, causing significant disruption for the local population and military personnel.

The incident took place at Niti Valley located in the Chamoli district on September 6.

Visuals showed a dangerous landslide unfolding on a mountainside, with the entire slope slowly crumbling and falling to the ground below. Massive rocks and debris were tumbling down along with it. A large crowd of people standing on the nearby road watched in fear, clearly alarmed by the sight of the collapsing mountain. The scene was tense, with the looming danger of falling rocks and destruction making the atmosphere even more frightening.

The Niti Valley in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district is grappling with continuous landslides, with the latest incident captured on mobile cameras today. Just last Friday, a massive landslide near Lata Village caused the closure of the crucial border road that connects India to China. The frequent landslides have severely impacted the movement of locals from dozens of villages, as well as Indian Army and ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) personnel, leaving them stranded.

Efforts were being made to clear the debris and reopen the route, but another large section of the mountain collapsed, sending massive amounts of debris cascading down. This has added to the challenges faced by authorities as they work to restore connectivity in the region.
