Tensions flare in southern after attempted rape of tribal woman sparks communal violence

In a town of southern India’s Telangana, tensions erupted after an auto-rickshaw driver allegedly attempted to rape and brutally assault a tribal woman.

The incident took place in Jainoor  town in Komaram Bheem district on September 4.

Visuals showed burning buildings, thick black smoke, and chaos on the streets, as police attempted to restore order amidst the violent unrest. An auto driver’s home was set ablaze by unknown assailants, igniting fires that destroyed ten nearby properties. The smoldering ruins left behind are stark and charred. In Jainur, escalating violence saw Aadhivasis burning Muslim homes, which prompted retaliatory attacks by Muslims on Aadhivasi properties. The scene is marked by blackened walls, shattered remnants, and the haunting remnants of once vibrant communities.

According to reports, this crime triggered widespread anger, leading to mobs torching shops and homes. The Telangana government responded by deploying riot police and enforcing Section 144 to prevent further escalation.  Authorities have urged restraint and warned against using social media to stoke communal disharmony.
