Landslides disrupt commutes cause major inconvenience in northeastern India

In a significant disruption in northeastern India’s Nagaland, landslides have severely affected road travel, causing major inconvenience to residents.

The incident took place at NH-29 in Kohima district on September 3.

Visuals showed extensive damage to the roads, with massive Visuals showed extensive damage to the roads, with massive cracks and debris scattered across the region. The highway, already compromised by previous landslides, was further devastated by new landslides following torrential rain.

According to reports, the first landslide occurred around 11 PM on September 3, striking the NH-29 stretch near Pherima. This massive slide caused tragic consequences and disrupted traffic on the highway, which had just reopened for single-lane travel after a previous blockage due to another landslide and mudslide higher up on NH-29 near Dzüdza.

Further down from Pherima, flooding in the Chathe River washed away a portion of NH-29 at the ‘Pagla-Pahar’ stretch, completely severing main road connectivity to Kohima and beyond. Recurrent rockslides have also closed one side of the four-lane highway in this stretch to traffic.
