Protesters scale parliament amidst protest to hoist Bangladesh flag

In a dramatic turn of events in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned, marking the end of her 15-year tenure. This follows thousands of protesters breaching her official residence despite a military curfew.

The incident took place on August 5.

Visuals showed that amidst the unrest, students were seen climbing the Parliament building and hoisting the Bangladeshi flag as a symbolic act of defiance. This dramatic gesture underscored the intensity and significance of their protest, which has become both violent and troubling.

According to reports, the unrest began in early June when students, frustrated with the quota system for government jobs, took to the streets. What started as a peaceful demand soon escalated into a full-blown challenge to Hasina and her Awami League party. The government’s attempt to suppress the protests with force has resulted in nearly 300 deaths and widespread outrage.

On August 4, violent clashes in the capital led to at least 95 fatalities, including 14 police officers, and hundreds more were injured, according to Prothom Alo. The violence has also led to the arrest of over 11,000 individuals and the closure of schools and universities nationwide. Authorities even imposed a shoot-on-sight curfew at one point.
