Violent protests escalate in Bangladesh: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Flees Dhaka

In a dramatic turn of events, Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina vacated Dhaka amid escalating violent protests demanding her resignation.

The incident took place in Bangladesh on August 4.

Visuals showed the protesters storming Hasina’s palace, overturning furniture, smashing glass door panels, and seizing books and other items.

According to reports, during a non-cooperation program led by Students Against Discrimination, clashes broke out with supporters of the ruling Awami League, Chhatra League, and Jubo League activists.

The Bengali-language newspaper Prothom Alo reported that at least 101 people, including 14 policemen, were killed in the clashes. In response, authorities cut off mobile internet and imposed a nationwide curfew for an indefinite period.

Local media reported that protesters stormed the prime minister’s palace, prompting Sheikh Hasina to flee to a safe location on Monday (August 5).

The Daily Star confirmed that at least six people were killed during clashes between police and protesters in the Jatrabari and Dhaka Medical College areas.

Students from various educational institutions gathered at Dhaka Central Shaheed Minar before and after 10 am to participate in the ‘March to Dhaka’ program, leading police to deploy tear gas to disperse them.
