Another airport incident: roof collapses in western India

Just a day after a tragic roof collapse at Terminal 1 of Delhi Airport, another incident has occurred at Rajkot Airport in northern India’s Gujarat.

The incident took place at Rajkot airport on June 29.

Visuals showed the hanging roof parts after the collapse looking dangerous as well as a sad sight to witness.

According to reports, a canopy at the airport collapsed, raising concerns about infrastructure safety in Indian airports. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported in this latest incident.

This comes on the heels of the fatal accident in Delhi, where a portion of the roof at Terminal 1 collapsed, resulting in the death of a construction worker and injuries to five others. Authorities are now under pressure to conduct thorough safety inspections across airports in the country to prevent further such occurrences.

Rajkot is a city in the western Indian state of Gujarat, known for its vibrant culture and economic significance. The city’s airport is a crucial hub for domestic travel, connecting the region to major cities like Mumbai and Delhi. This incident at Rajkot Airport has heightened scrutiny on the maintenance and safety standards of airport facilities across India.

Following these incidents, the Indian government has ordered immediate inspections and reviews of airport infrastructure nationwide. Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has called for a comprehensive report to understand the causes behind these structural failures and to implement necessary preventive measures.

These events have sparked a debate on the quality and safety of construction and maintenance practices at Indian airports, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations and oversight.
