Major commute path gets affected by torrential rains in northeast India

Massive landslides in Meghalaya have led to a complete halt in vehicular traffic on National Highway-6, which serves as a vital link between Guwahati and Silchar. The concerned video went viral on June 18.
Visuals showed the consequences of torrential rain that occurred in the region causing a portion of NH 06 to collapse. The collapse put a halt to commute causing massive traffic in the region.
According to reports, the relentless rainfall over the past few days culminated in landslides that have rendered passage through the highway. The landslides have created a precarious situation for hundreds of passenger and goods vehicles now stranded on the highway, with travelers left waiting indefinitely for the route to be cleared and traffic to resume.
According to officials, local authorities have responded to the situation quickly. They mobilized teams to assess the extent of the damage. Reportedly, emergency response units and disaster management teams are working effortlessly to ensure that the affected areas are made safe.
A red alert for “extremely heavy rain” has been issued for parts of northeast India, particularly for Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, till June 18.
The alert from India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday evening came hours after parts of National Highway 6 (NH-6) in Meghalaya caved in due to landslides triggered by incessant rains.
