Anti-corruption raid in southern India uncovers tonnes cash and gold at police officer’s home
In a major anti-corruption operation, authorities in southern India’s Telangana discovered 4.5 million rupees (approximately $54,000) in cash and 650 grams (approximately 23 ounces) of gold jewellery at the residence of a senior police officer.
The incident took place in Ashok Nagar in Hyderabad on May 21.
Visuals showed authorities calculating the worth of the jewellery and the money led out on the table along with other worthy things in the house.
The officer, identified as Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Umamaheshwar Rao, was targeted in a raid conducted by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).
The raid followed allegations of corruption and illicit wealth accumulation. The ACB’s investigation team searched Rao’s house and found the substantial cash and gold, which are suspected to be proceeds from corrupt activities. Such discoveries are part of a broader effort by Indian authorities to combat corruption within the ranks of government officials and law enforcement agencies.
This incident has sparked public outrage and calls for stricter measures to ensure accountability among police officers and other public servants. The ACB has initiated legal proceedings against Rao, and further investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of his alleged corrupt activities.
