A severe case of food poisoning has affected 150 students at a school located in southern India’s Andhra Pradesh.
The incident took place in Dr BR Ambedkar Gurukula School in Naidupet, Tirupati district on July 15.
Visuals showed the sick students in very struggling conditions, the officials that came to visit the children and the contaminated raw food material used to cook the food.
According to reports, the incident began when students consumed puri, a type of deep-fried bread, prepared on Saturday night and served on Sunday. Later that day, more students fell ill after eating chicken cooked with substandard oil.
The affected students began experiencing symptoms of vomiting and were promptly attended to by medical staff. Five students, who were seriously ill, were transferred to hospitals in the nearby city of Nellore. Other sick students are being treated at government hospitals in Gudur and Naidupet.
This incident has highlighted ongoing concerns about food safety at the hostel, with reports indicating that students frequently suffer from food poisoning due to negligence by the hostel staff. Upon learning about the situation, District Collector Venkateshwar and District Medical Officer Srihari swiftly visited the school to oversee the response and ensure proper care for the students.
