Major water leak in northern India raises concerns over resource management
Residents of a village in northern India’s Delhi are facing a severe water crisis as lakhs of liters of water have been wasted over the last five days due to a significant leak in the local water supply system.
The incident took place in Garhi Mendu village of North East Delhi district and the news went viral on June 14.
Visuals showed the leakage and water wastage from the water supply pipes.
According to reports the incident has sparked frustration and criticism from the community towards the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the city’s water authority.
Amid escalating water scarcity in Delhi, political tensions surge between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and BJP. The BJP accuses the AAP government of corruption contributing to Delhi’s water shortage, while AAP’s Water Minister Atishi points fingers at the BJP-led Haryana government and the Centre.
The Delhi government has taken the matter to the Supreme Court, where the court rebuked Delhi for water wastage, affirming that Delhi receives its allocated water from Haryana. However, recognizing Delhi’s pressing water crisis, the court has directed the Himachal Pradesh government to release an additional 137 cusecs of water to Delhi from their reserves.
